Archive of Proto-Black Metal & Post Romantic Danish Art since 1808:
“I Belong in The Woods and Have Always Done So” is a digital archive dedicated to the documentation, recording and dissemination of Danish Avant Garde Art & Artists that have had a significant impact on the aesthetic, philosophical and ideological ideas crucial to the emergence of the 2nd wave of Norwegian Black Metal in the early 1990’s.

In addition to cultural artifacts such as paintings, music (scores & recordings) and poetry, the site also contains biographies, letters, theoretical writings and other ephemera that might help illuminate the artists engagement with various political, social, cultural and religious matters.

The goal of the association is to gradually build an encyclopedic overview of culturally important but historically overlooked Danish Avant Garde Artists while drawing attention to the complex relationship between historical and contemporary ideas about art, nature, political propaganda, myth, mental illness, political radicalization and religious devotion.

Due to the extreme nature of many of these art practices it is important to highlight that the goal of the organization is not to promote, condone or applaud the views and actions of the described artists. Rather the goal is to describe a historical reality while drawing attention to its implications on contemporary convictions & beliefs.

In addition to the organization, interpretation and dissemination of historical artifacts gradual efforts will be made to restore, (re)record and/or perform historic works that currently seem to have been lost to time. Research surrounding the various artworks are being undertaken whenever possible.

Access to archival material for the purpose of research, performance, recording etc. can be attained by contacting founder and primary archivist Jacob Ridderberg at: Ridderberg1992@gmail.com.
