Anton Nielsen Hedonia - The Black Bile of Winter

Anton Nielsen Hedonia:

Anton Nielsen Hedonia (1923-1991) was a danish/greek artist famous for his pioneering work within such diverse fields as sound art, experimental drone music, visual art and extreme performance art. His work was primarily centered around themes relating to sensory deprivation, lack, confinement, isolation, stillness, sacrifice, stasis, immovability, the necessity of pain and negative emotion, national identity as well as the relationship between man and nature.

Exploration of these ideas where particularly prominent in his performance practice which often entailed various acts of self harm, self confinement, bondage as well as suppression of physical and/or psychological needs for extended periods of time. Some of the most radical examples of this practice include pieces such as “Melancholy Drain”, “Hospital(ity) // Bound by Blood” and “Blodbøg” which all incorporate the use of cutting and/or bloodletting for extended periods of time.
